I apologize if I seemed too snappish.  Yes, you're absolutely right, and there have been numerous reports of relay failures in this forum already (though most have been fail-to-operate, rather than fail-to-shut-off, I think).  The ways to minimize these relay failures have been noted as well -- Bosch relays, continuous-duty relays, zener diodes, other diodes, etc, and I won't list them here.

I understood that the pump should be turned off during the monthly alternate gear  extension test.  The manual suggests pulling the relay circuit breaker (to keep the pump from turning on), but not pulling the pump breaker, and then dumping hydraulic pressure using the manual dump valve.  I never understood this.  I had planned on pulling my single circuit breaker, cutting power to both the pump and the relays, and then opening the dump valve.

I'd appreciate any comments on this proposed test procedure.  If I've missed something important I'd like to know.

By the way, I learned a while ago that I should not send work-related e-mails after 5 pm.  I'm too tired and I ended up pissing people off needlessly with quick responses.  I haven't followed that rule in this forum since I get my digests late in the evening and usually respond right away.  Too bad, since as a general rule I value the respect of my fellow Lancair builders more than that of my employers.  (Maybe I need a new job...)
