I read with interest Fred Moreno's input on TAS corrections. I flew the SR-71 for over 8 years and we were obviously subject to major errors in the pitot static systems at Mach 3. In fact we disregarded those systems after going through Mach 1 and reverted to a computerized, digital readout instrument called the TDI (Triple Display Indicator). It provided us corrected data for KEAS (knots equivalent air speed), Mach # and altitude. KEAS became our "indicated A/S" while supersonic. Compressibility at over Mach 3, and skin temperatures of over 800 degrees F, call for LARGE corrections. Fortunately, my little 235 works just fine with pitot static stuff. Pat Halloran
