Much to my chagrin, it was I who started the thread title "Garmin 530 boycott".  Sorry this got attributed unfairly to you.  Maybe with eight years under Bill Clinton's presidency I've learned how to remain untarred by the broad brush of scandal.  Sorry -- this was not intended.  Mea culpa.

Rereading your original post I discover that I pretty much agree with you completely-- we should be allowed to install just about any equipment ourselves with the understanding that the oversight of an approved shop may be required by a manufacturer.  How much help you get from that shop would vary with each individual builder.  I guess I differ with Hamid on this point, but I respect his opinion and I certainly understand where he's coming from.

The whole thread has been fascinating, though somewhat academic for me as I'll be stuck with my hand held GPS for a while.  Maybe I'll swipe that King ADF from my Cessna 150, too, so I can listen to Rush Limbaugh....

On an ever-so-slightly different topic, why will King/AlliedSignal/Honeywell insist on installing a new KX-155 for me, but they'll be quite happy to let me install a factory reconditioned one?  Where's the logic here?
