I am familiar with Garmin's stance on this subject, but do know a little
about King's, and and it has to do with liability issues if there were to
be an accident. The best a manufacturer can do is to make sure that their
equipment gets installed and operates correctly when delivered to the
customer. The more complicated things get, the more you will see this
approach by manufactures to help reduce the possibility of lawsuits. I
think everyone is aware that liability is the main reason for the high cost
of operation critical hardware.
