I have the small tailed 320 with the original "Spring" elevator trim.  I
made no modifications to the springs and the trim system has worked out fine
for me.  You can adjust the range of the trim by drilling alternate holes
for the cotter pin and the position of the trim by adjusting location of the
teflon blocks on the elevator push rod.
The only problem that I have had with this spring trim system is that after
a time you will loose friction as the teflon washers wear down.  The trim
then does not stay where you set it.  You can then increase the friction by
tightening the nut on the friction bolt but since this seems to be only a
temporary solution, I have elected to place a rubber washer (cut from an
inner tube) between the AN970 area washer and the teflon washer, thus
maintaining a relatively constant pressure on the teflon washer.  Since I
installed the rubber washer about 4 years ago, I have had no problems with
the elevator trim.
