I have been reading up on the trim spring modifications on the small tail
320 and before I started cutting thought I'd ask if any of the short tail
320 pilots thought the springs should really be beefed up or lengthened.
thanks,<

First a little history.  The original trim system for the 360 uses a spring
centering system.  In the 360 there was not enough trim authority to trim
from cruise all the way down to approach speeds hands off.  The trim mechanism was a friction lever.  With the trim friction set tight
enough so it would not slip, it was difficult to get the trim handle to
move smoothly.

Several builders including myself went to a geared trim system eliminating
the trim handle and replacing it with a trim wheel .  This system was
smooth and positive.  However, it was found that the factory centering
springs were not strong enough to allow trimming full range with out
bottoming.

Several builders had batches of stronger springs made up and sold them as a
favor.  Dick Reichel marketed a trim assembly which included new and
stronger springs.  There was talk about Lancair retailing his system but I
don't know if that ever came about.  As I recall Lancair did eventually go
to stronger springs.

There is a lot of information about elevator trim in the Lancari Network
News Archives.  Contact Marve for the CD if you don't already have it.  A
geared trim system with the small tail works great provided the advisories
in the LNN are followed. Jim Frantz
