I've recently been through "heat muff hell" with my Lycoming O-320. I'm
using a 60 amp alternator and the "old-style" Lancair 3/4C exhaust system. The carb. heat and cabin heat outlets that come off the bottom of the heat
muff collide with the bottom of the cowl. I spoke to Vern at the factory
and he said the exhaust system was redesigned to accomodate the 60 amp
alternator. I'm not sure which year this occured, but if you bought a kit
and exhaust system back in 1989, like I did, your probably going to have
problems. Even if you use a smaller alternator, your SCAT tube clearance
coming off the bottom of the heat muff is minimal. I would rather not let
the SCAT tubes lay on the cowl since the vibration will probably wear a
hole in the duct but I doubt I'll be able to avoid this condition.
