Doh! I say again, "DOH!"
This is exactly my problem. If I re-examine the cabin heat valve, I see that the "design problem" I referred to is cured in this manner. The "manufacturing defect" is not, but I can fix this by straightening out the flipper plate (whatever it's called) if I have to. First, however, I'll connect it to the exhaust of my vacuum cleaner and see if the small gap is a problem. It may actually be just fine.
