I contacted the Kobold Instrument company, another manufacturer of those
optical level sensors and asked which of their products would be suitable
for use in a fuel tank.  Below is a reply I just received from them, JIC
anyone else tracks down this company through independent reaseach and is
thinking about using what they call their "TED" sensor.  I thought Mr.
Pio's comments would be valuable to the group.

Model TED in stainless steel should be suitable; however, this product is
not explosion-proof or intrinsically safe.  Please contact Tony Marx at
