I recently posted to the list about a propeller overspeed and control
problem, and thought I would update the list...
Last week the local maintenance facility performed a test on my engine to
determine if the main bearing (the "thrust bearing") was holding adequate
pressure or if it was bleeding to much pressure to allow the propeller to be
properly governed.
The engine was determined to be fine - very well within the specs provided
by Lycoming. So, the engine is fine, the prop was newly overhauled by MT
(sent back to Germany) and the governor was newly overhauled and set to 2700
RPM.
This leaves two thoughts: 1) the oil, at 220 degrees, is TOO hot and I need
to do some modifications to keep oil temps cooler; 2) the propeller coarse
pitch should be changed to reduce the static RPM capability to about 2400
RPM.
I would like to thank all those that have provided help on this subject -
particularly Mike Dehate and Darus Zehrbach. Mike has been patient and his
knowledge has saved me many hours/days of research and he even offered to
mail me parts to perform the leak test. Darus has always been available for
consultation and has provided numerous faxes of information, technical
diagrams...
So now I am working to install a larger oil cooler and a separate duct to
the cooler. Making brackets and fiberglassing is tough now though - I'm not
permitted to do work at the airport where the airplane is located, so I have
to take measurements... then go home and make brackets. It will be a time
consuming process.
On the positive side, the panel is working correctly (thanks Bryant
Cervans), the engine is purring and powerful (thanks Darus) and the plane
seems to fly straight (thanks Mike)! I just can't wait to fly it myself (I
doubt my landings will look anywhere near as nice as Mikes though)!
