Howard has great information for those who may choose to use non-aircraft
alternators on their ships. I am forwarding this to the list without doing
any prior investigation so you're on your own here, guys. Enjoy, and thanks
to Howard for the help!

When I posted my message I thought it would go to the list, but it seems
that
it only went to you. I am not a member of the group so maybe you could
post
this to the group for me.
The companies that I know produce brushless alternators are:
C.E.Niehoff & CO.
Prestolite
Denso
Electrodyne
There may be others.
The alternators are popular on heavy trucks and emergency vehicles because
of their hight sustained output, but are finding their way into regular
cars
and trucks nowdays. With the high powered sterio systems, and the large
number of electricaly powered accesories I wonder why they have not taken
over the market. They can maintain high output at a much higher dutycycle
than a standard alternator can.
The one that I have is made by Niehoff, and is a 70 or 75 amp unit, the
same size as the dodge part it replaced. I looked at the prestolite web
site
www.prestolite.com/arc/pgs_alt/alt_0/html
and they have a range of alternators in what look like standard sizes with
outputs of 140 amps. or higher.
One of the sites that I came across when doing a search for brushless
alternators listed no arcing at high altitude as one of the advantages of
the brushless design.
My brother was the person who took care of the school busses for a small
school district here in Eastern Washington State. He was replacing a lot
of
alternators because of the stop and go driving coupled with high drain
imposed
by all the lights they used. After switching to the brushless units his
alternator problems went away. In a fleet of 21 busses in constant use
over a period of 12 years, he only had to replace 3 due to regulator
failure.
Thank you, Howard KB7FZZ.
