There is no need to pound control rod rivets if you follow this procedure:

1)  Fill the cavity of the fitting with epoxy-flox.

2)  Put a small amount of epoxy on the fitting and slip into the tube.

3)  Drill the holes thru the assembly.

4)  Cut the rivet to the length and insert, making sure you have the required
       1.5 D of the rivet sticking out the other end.  A small amount of epoxy         on the shaft of the rivet is acceptable, if you wish, but clean it off the         end that will be pressed.  (You did cut the end of the rivet squarely with
         a rivet cutter or Dremel, didn't you?  Don't use side-nippers)

5)  If you do not have a rivet squeezer of appropriate throat size to insert the     assembly for squeezing, remove the two dies from the squeezer, and now
     do the following:

A)  Open the jaws of your bench vise, and with a side-angle drill, drill holes      of the same diameter  to accept the dies, making sure they are opposite      each other and aligned.  Put a small amount of super glue on the shafts
     of the two dies and insert them into your bench vise.  You now have a       5" rivet squeezer.  To remove the dies later, heat with a torch until the       glue softens.

B)  You can do the same thing with a couple of pieces of scrap metal and a      friend's hydraulic shop ram, but care is needed to not over-squeeze the       assembly.
