The black "socket" should be flush with the outer surface of the skin.  A bunch of flox stuffed between the inner and outer skin provides the strength to hold the socket in place.  You're talking about pushing it in further, so you'd need to do something else to support it.

I just bent the handle by clamping it in a vice, placing a piece of wood on it, and whacking the wood with a hammer.  I have a nice-looking bend in the handle that conforms reasonably to the outer skin.  Later on I'll build a micro blister.
