Since I saw that it was going to be  practiclly impossible to get behind the panel to do anything, I decided to make an attempt at hinging the panel at the fuselage mounts.  First, it was necessary to beef up the mounting flanges with another 4 bid. Then,  2 1/2 in strap hinges were bolted to the mounting flanges.  The other side of the strap hinges are bolted to the panel with the threaded ends protruding through the front of the panel just enough to screw on the stainless acorn nuts(all # 10).  the top the the panel is braced with 3/8 in Al tubing from the firewall gussets.  By removing the glare shield and disconnecting  the top ends of the braces, the panel can be tilted back about 30 degrees, greatly facilitating access to the panel.  It is necessary to have the controls on a separate removable panel at the bottom of the panel so the control cables do not have to be disturbed when tilting the panel.  Sure makes it easier to plug on the Garmin 403 antennas (6 for the two units),  and anything else you have to get to back there.

And speaking of antennas, I located the two Garmin GPS antennas between the fire wall and the air dam just below the top of the cowling.  Also have a Skyforce GPS antenna mounted there, too.  This makes for a very short run to the panel, and they are all working great with no interference, and picking up all the sattelites needed.  Bob Young LIV N32BY, 32 hours. (Later I'll post the rest of the story on the starter adapter problem I had.  Running ok now.)
