A note to Eric Kendall re. the subject line.
I have these on my early 235 and at the start, they were reluctant to insert
far enough to realiably lock into place. I found that a little persuasion
with a file around the junction of the pin and ring (to get a little bit
more insertion depth) was all it took. Seems the things are produced to too
tight a tolerance for the insertion depth. I probably took off no more than
0.010 and most likely could have taken off some more without weakening the
thing if needed. It's also possible to touch the receiver tube lightly with
a hardware type counter sink to get a bit of additional insertion depth.
S'probably all that's needed - unless the builder really screwed up - rather
unlikely as the things are sorta idiot-proof.
You might also be able to get a tool up in there that has a small 90 degree
cutter edge on it to scrape the upper edge of the tube in case there's some
wayward resin set up there that could keep the balls from popping out and
locking. Just don't get too vigorous - you don't want to cut into the spar
where the thing's mounted.
Since the sockets are permanently buried in you wing, it makes sense to try
to make them work.
Good luck,
Dan Schaefer
