"Tim, why
do you need any mount at all? They normally come with the kit….
:-)
there was none with my kit....
needed it for something else....
none of your business.... the dog ate
it....
Hmmm, ok... It comes down to stupidity. On my
part. Yes, it´s out now.....
I thought my engine mount would look really cool
with a chrome job stuck to it. It kinda did, but I later learned
that chrome jobs do not go hand in hand with structural steel parts,
especially chrome molybdenum parts, due to possible "hydrogen
brittleness".
There is no way of telling whether or not the mount
is still good, but I don´t want to find out the ugly way.
I did, however, decide to finish the aircraft
with untamed confidence in own CG judgement skills (yes, I
hacked off a perfectly good cowling for the long mount, custom painted
it with a checkered pattern and installed short cables and wiring) and
weigh it, before changing the engine mount. I would not have liked to install
another short mount only to discover later, that I should have had a long
mount....
If you are
in search of a mount, buy the long one."
Thank you, but no thanks!
The long mount, in itself, is nothing to wish for.
The (only!) good news in my case is, that the CG
is absolutely perfect with the short mount. 360 builders, read carefully
now:
My setup is
MKII tail (much safer and better looking
:-)
Outback gear (little effect on CG)
No antennas in V-stab
No rudder trim (but the balanced rudder still
weighs a ton or so)
Hyd pump behind pilot seatback
Header tank
Battery on firewall in passenger footwell (rudder
pedals in pilot side only)
O-360-A1A engine
Hartzell prop (HC-F2YR-1F with F7068-2 blades,
presumably made of lead)
Heavy paint job (UV primer, 2 coats of white, 2
coats of blue on bottom half, 4 coats of clear, some of the lot wet sanded off
again)
Empty weight 1205 lbs. (incl. 7qts. oil, fire
extinguisher, medical kit and unusable fuel)
Empty CG @ FS 23,05"
Most fwd CG condition imaginable (header full,
wings empty, 220 lbs pilot, no passenger), CG @ FS 24.45. One TicTac in luggage
compartment required and kids under 220 lbs shouldn´t play with aircraft anyway.
I am a 250 lbs. kitten, so my most fwd CG is @ FS
25. I can only loose 28 lbs without having to carry a TicTac.
Most aft CG condition (hardly!) imaginable (header
empty, wings empty, 55 lbs. luggage, 530 lbs. pilot & passenger), CG @ FS
28,76 or 1.54" fwd. of aft CG limit and perfectly acceptable, even with the
dangerous small tail.
Short engine mounts are GREAT!
The story is, of course, different for those with a
320 engine, an MT prop and perhaps even a MKII tail.
If anyone would like the full W&B worksheet,
please contact me directly and I will send it. Yes, it uses metric units; all
your prayers answered!
