I have been using xD cards with an adapter as per Tim Olsen (check his site http://www.cheltonefispilots.com/forums/) with good success. In general format in FAT not FAT32. Use a PC (I am a mac user and sometimes the formating doesn't seem to work). If after you put the card in and apply power, you do not get to the maintenance screen, do a soft reboot - press both round buttons at the same time. If none of these work, try it again.
