I am vacationing in Colorado and was surprised today when I got an email from flightaware indicating someone was flying my plane from Kansas to Norman OK.   So I looked up the number of the Norman tower and told them that someone had made an error or was fraudulently using my tail number and would be landing in Norman shortly.   They asked what I wanted to do.  I said I want to know the real tail number on the bird and gave them my cell number.   I also told them if the person was indeed answering to my tail number and they saw a different tail number when he landed, if I were them I would call the police.   I knew if it was fraudulent it was the world's dumbest criminal because he was in the system as an SR-22.

After he landed I got the call from the FAA.  Per the FAA,  the guy said he had used his correct tail number when he took off and the controller got it wrong (our tail numbers are identical in 5 of the 6 numbers)  He corrected the controller but the subsequent controller also read off my tail number upon contact.  Instead of correcting him, this time the guy decided it would just be easier to start using my tail number, and he did.  He even did it once after he was on the ground in Norman with the correct tail number visible to the tower.

FAA told him it was his responsibility to correct controllers when they read back the wrong tail number.   So it was an innocent enough mistake but made for an interesting afternoon.
