That low profile quick drain plug has a spring that closes a valve. When you put the cap with the barb on it, it pushes the valve open. When the other cap is on or there is no cap on, the valve is held closed by the spring.

I tried using this solution but it didn't fit. It hit the gas strut ball. I guess it depends on how your nose gear ends up being aligned. In my case it didn't work. Fortunately I have a separate drain hole in my pan on the other side. It is at an angle and allows me to use a standard quick drain. It just barely missed hitting the hydrolic actuator. Lucky me.

I use an old long handled screwdriver and punch a hole in the top of the oil filter.
I leave the filter on and tight for ½ hour to 1 hour after punching the hole.
Filter comes off with no-mess.

Lancair sell a low profile quick drain that replaces the sump plug.
 
Works well and no mess. I wish I could say the same when removing the oil filter.
