[Here at Diemech we routinely fight a similar battle with bolts that need a
thinned-down socket be used for service... we, too, used to use a Snap-On 12-point that we would turn down on the lathe in order to achieve the
required clearance. Problem was that one of those sockets would only survive a single overhaul (sometimes, not even that), at which time a crack
would develop somewhere and had to be replaced. At $20+/socket it started to add up. I switched us to $4/each impact sockets from McMaster Carr
that would get the same thinning treatment, but found that they would survive multiple overhaul cycles before failing... haven't bought a Snap-On
