I don't think it really matters. This is not a highly stressed part. I'd use any 6000 series (6061, 6063), 2024 or 7075. I'm using 6061, because it was readily available.
If you think about it, the likely failure modes are buckling, not overstress. Buckling will not be affected significantly by alloy selected, since the Young's modulus for the alloys is comparable (he says, without actually looking it up).
