If you have any printed documentation (specifically from the FAA) on the subject of "not" removing data plates from engines, it would be better than hearsay.  Some of us may, someday, need something concrete to rub the inspector's nose in when it comes time to dispute his/her interpretation of the regulations.  Policy is often just an opinion at the local level.
