In jacking my Legacy, I have to do as Jay describes below.
Additionally, I employ an engine hoist with a chain attached to the
engine lift point located at the front of the engine.  Although a lot of
chain tension is not really needed as the plane is fairly well balanced
on the jacks with the tail weight, it offers some insurance against a
prop strike should one of the hydraulic jacks fail when the gear is up.
Being "anal" like I am, I also place "saw horses" covered with Styrofoam
under the outboard wing rib locations - not sure if they would support
the plane if the jack(s) failed completely, but should help keep the
plane supported if just a slow hydraulic leak occurs.  Note that I
purchased an inexpensive engine hoist at Harbor Freight when they were
having one of their big sales.  Regarding the tail weight, I made one
from an extra oval firewood tub we had by filling it with Quikrete with
an eye bolt sunk therein.  Make sure you install some "wings" on the
eyebolt so that it doesn't pull out of the cement under load.  Best wishes,        Dana

I attach a weight (250 - 300 lbs.) to the tail tie-down.

I have jacks and jack pads for my Legacy but have never jacked one.
Will I need weight to hold the tail down? Should I use the tail tie down
to fasten to weight?
