Fred, the earlier iPads had GPS, the latter ones with 3G/4g have chipset with GPS built in. Mine, ipad2 has 3g and i just turn off cell service to use GPS, works perfectly on my trip this weekend across US and Canada. The two portable gps units we used went u/s on the visor with sunlight heat. I have never needed a portable gps. i would advise getting a Cell-capable iPad as it gives lots of abilities traveling, I have cheap simchips for Canada, USA. I pay zero for all North American plates and maps on fltplan.com. My macbookpro stays close but is rarely needed. Get a apple refurb pad2 with cell and be happy for a few sheckles. I find all the fbos have wireless so stops don't need a cell. I use skype on the pad to make calls now. if you use vonage you can even use the iphone and wireless for calls for free using vonage "extensions". But if i need ipad cell service I turn it on and use it in podunkville. The $1000 jepp invoices and humungous cell charges disappeared long ago. You will not be disappointed.
