Even better ..... A slight mod to your scheme.
On jacks and dump valve open, unbolt the strut from the link and press
upward checking for a resistance of X pounds. The link is like a lever arm
and one should be able to calculate the force on the end of the link that
corresponds to 100# at the gas spring. Yes, use a bathroom scale.

PS on the 300 series, replacing the cotter pin at the top of the wheel
well leaves scars on your hands.....................

I am always for more tools, but I usually just remove the bolt through
the gear leg holding the overcenter links. Open the dump valve and
either put the plane on jacks or for the nose gear tie the tail down, then
just remove the gas cylinder, check or replace it and pull the gear and
replace the bolt. Make sure to replace that safety
clip.
