I am always for more tools, but I usually just remove the bolt through the gear leg holding the overcenter links.  Open the dump valve and either put the plane on jacks or for the nose gear tie the tail down, then just remove the gas cylinder, check or replace it and pull the gear and replace the bolt.  Make sure to replace that safety clip.
