He donated (and funded) the peace prize to assuage his conscience. Going a little off topic, this is the story as I read it a while back. Alfred Nobel discovered the dynamite as a construction tool and was quite unhappy with the destructive uses it was being put to. Late in his life, his brother died and one of the newspapers thought that it was he who had died and printed his obituary. Alfred was so disturbed by what he read that he went about trying to mend his legacy. He donated most (all?) of his estate to establish and endow the Nobel prize.
