I plan on using quarter-turn fasteners, such as Camlocs or
the equivalent product from Skybolt fasteners.  Talking to Lancair flyers
at Oshkosh, the overwhelming preference was for stainless steel hardware
rather than cadmium plated steel.<

A problem that you may have with the Camlocks is due to the amount of
protrusion on the inside of both teh upper and lower cowl.  In order to
remove the upper cowl from the lower, it requires a bit of flexing of the
cowl for the male part  to clear the female part of the Camlock.  A friend
of mine did the Camlock bit and replaced them with machine screws once he
got part way into it and realized the problems.  Also the Camlock sticks
into the engine compartment quite a ways.  I've seen it work but be aware
----

Because of the problems above I used lots of machine screws.  It works good
and takes about 5 minutes to unscrew them all with an electric screw
driver.  The nut plates stick into the engine compartment less than 1/4"
and with all the screws removed, the upper cowling just lifts straight off
no problem.  I think the cowling was the most difficult part of the
construction process. It is also the most likely part to be botched and a
new part ordered up.

I borrowed a run out engine and mounted it on the firewall prior to fitting
the cowl which helped out a lot.  Good luck.
