Greg,
This is a photo of one of two Audi HID assemblies via eBay @ $49.00 on our
Legacy. The lens are only 1 5/8" in diameter and the leading edge
plexiglass (1/2 of a leading edge lens from Lancair) is only 2.5". I have
been told they look like someone is arc welding on the wings in the pattern.
We removed the inner wing skin core under the area planned for the tray for
a little extra clearance. Laid a 2 bid over the de-cored area with about a
1" overlap around the perimeter. The tray is 3 bid if I recall correctly.
I left the plastic on the bottom of the tray lay up for release and peel
plied the top. The mounting brackets for the HID lamp and ballast were
fabed to fit. The tray is attached with 4, #8 screws from the bottom of the
wing but a bulb can be replaced or the lens cleaned thru the inspection
cover or pitot mount plate. As recognition lights they work well. As a landing light you should add a
tilt adjustment. As a taxi light it will be subject to how high the struts
are inflated and weight in the airplane. Since we don't fly after dark it
has not been a problem for us. Steve Colwell Legacy RG
