I'm trying to select the proper AWG size for a 60A current, assuming a single wire. If I use the dc_awg wiring worksheet from the LML attachments, submitted by Scott Dahlgren, I get 8 AWG (for continuous 60A). If I look in the Aero-Electric Connection wire table, which allows a 35 deg. C temp. rise for a single wire, 8 AWG wire is good only for 40A. That seems to me to be a significant discrepancy. I'd like to use the 8 AWG wire to save weight, but how hot is it going to get at 60A? Anyone have a comment? Thanks.<
The bible is AC43.13-2A and for a continuous load at 60 amps the required
size is 8 AWG which at 14V is good for a 9 foot run with no more than a .5V
drop. For 28V systems the max run is 18 feet with an allowable 1V drop. The Lancair guy Scott Dahlgren is right again.
The above assumes wire in free air. Perhaps the Aero-Electric connection
was quoting wiring in conduits and bundles which in this case the
Aero-Connection numbers are correct too.
