How about eliminating the diode in favor of a switch? Use a DPDT switch (20A rating). One pole could switch the critical bus
from normal to backup power and the other pole could be used to connect
the backup battery to the charging bus and would then simultaneously open
the circuit to the charging bus, isolating the backup battery.
