Yeah, I have a very similar problem.  In summary, I have a Lancair designed and installed electrical system in my Legacy.  The problem came after changing the primary alternator at around 300 hours of flying.  After changing the altenator, about 98% of the time that I would cycle the gear up the field breaker would pop.  Spikes were noted on occasion but after testing and replacing every suspected item, nothing was resolved.  A band-aid approach suggested by my brother has resolved the problem and I have had no tripped field breakers in over 50 hours.

It was suggested by those who desired to help that I most likely had a bad ground or an intermittent connection somewhere.  I traced and checked and cleaned every connection, did not solve the problem.  I tested and found the voltage regulator to be good but traded it out anyway, did not solve the problem.  Replaced the circuit breaker as it had tripped so many times even though it still tested good, did not solve the problem.  Traded out wires in case there was a wire that was abraded in a location that I could not see that may be making intermittent contact, did not solve the problem.  After 14 months of discussing and trying things suggested by Gary Lane at Lancair, I finally had my brother come out to the hanger to help me.  He suggested that the only explanation he could come up with was a spike in the system.  What was causing the spike was still a mystery but he found an item on the internet that he thought should solve the problem as its job is to absorb spikes.  Well, it did work and as I said has for over 50 hours.  By the way I tested and changed out more than this email would suggest.  I would guess that Gary Lane spent over 40 hours on the phone with me while I would test items then come up with a plan to change out something then test again all to no avail.

Subject: [LML] Field breakers popping

Dear Listers,

Recently, I completed my annual and test flew the airplane.  Upon lifting the gear both primary and secondary alternator field breakers popped.  Pushed them back in and all charging returned to normal on the primary and secondary alternators.

Landed, checked connections, put in a different battery, ran through B and C voltage regulator troubleshooting guide (came out normal)  and did a ground run up.  When lifting the flaps, hydraulic pump kicked on both field breakers popped again.  Right now I am assuming it is the voltage regulator (both pri and sec are B and C), alternator , or a connector.

Anyone have similar issues and can recommend the next course of action?

Thank you,

Craig Gainza
