Mike,
I will do my best to your questions below... and will try to snap some photos when I get home.
Jeff Posted for "Mike Wynn" < wynaire@citlink.net>: Hello Jeff, Thanks a lot for the super info article on your rudder light.! Saved my bacon
{head scratching over which and what LED to start experimenting with] and timely. If you have time, please address a few more details that will with help with my follow-on {yours} installation. 1. Type of electrical connector you used for the flex lead carrying the 14v
to the rudder? -Near the bottom of the rudder is an access panel for the elevator horn. Just inside that panel I hysol'd in a small barrier strip. I use crimp-on ring terminals on the
wires from the LED.
2. Did you "lay" the light-pipe on a rudder rib for vertical support?
-No. The rudder was already closed out and primed so I just picked a spot near the top.
Locating the pipe up high minimizes the length of the light pipe. I used a generous amount of hysol to pot the output end into the notch I cut into the trailing edge. I also used hysol
where the input end goes through the vertical structure of the rudder.
3. Any thoughts about mounting the LED in V-Stab spar directed onto the
light-pipe [forward end]?
-I mounted two nut-plates to a 3/8 " wide strip of scrap aluminum sheet. Then bonded
that in place with hysol, inside the rudder, as a mount for the heat sink. Had to thread the nut-plate-carrier thorugh the 1 inch hole I made for the LED. Sketches attached.
I had the heat sink screwed in place while the hysol set. 4. Other creative uses for LED lighting in your plane? Wing-tip LED lighting
is on my list as well.
-Sure. Please look up my other posts. 5. Have you experimented with LED wig-wagging at the tips, rudder or on the
landing gear?
- Made a wing tip strobe, but not Wig-Wag landing lights. My sincere thanks in advance for any replies, Mike Wynn
