Yeah, that's why it works. Even though the oil is harder to ignite (you can't set it on fire easily) it cracks under heat and pressure during combustion into unstable compounds and lowers the octane rating. Now Paul, that diesel fuel you put into your truck tank was designed to run in an engine that produces combustion by compression alone, right? Adding diesel fuel to your high octane fuel will LOWER your octane rating for the same reason listed above. I dunno about the more power out of lower octane, but the above is straight out of the book. The title if the book is "Internal Combustion Engines" by Edward F. Obert. It is copyrighted '44, '50 and '68 and this is a second printing from 1968. It is too old to have an ISBN but its Library of Congress Catalog Card Number is 68-16128.
