Your math which computes 1080 pounds for 180 gallons of fuel correctly indicates
that all the normal useful load could be consumed. However, if you want to fly
with 3000 miles of range, you will take off with a waiver and way over normal gross
weight. Think 3600 pounds or therabouts depending on the airplane. Also, keep in
mind that the unpressurized Lancair IV will typically weigh in below 2000 pounds if
not lavishly equipped and upholstered, allowing for a normal useful load of more
like 1200 pounds. But if you want to go a LONG way, plan to take off HEAVY.
