US and Canada have tacitly= agreed not to check for them. This comes from my air tour leader for two tr= ips to Alaska. With these two trips and two more to Canada, I would advise n= ot to worry. The bigger worry is if you take a firearm into Canada. Lots of p= aperwork there and huge penalties if you slip up. Mace or pepper spray is al= so prohibited. They always refer to it as pepper spray. Also, when declaring spirits, the correct answer is: for personal consumptio= n. Customs in Canada are quite simple- a call before takeoff, answer their q= uestions, fly, land, taxi to the customs area, call the toll free number aga= in. More often than not, they will verify the previous info and give you a c= learance number to show you have passed. You probably won't even have to shu= t down if your cell phone is rigged for Canada. eAPIS is the most challenging. Setup your account on line and front load the= info for the trip. You can declare the person who occupies the right front s= eat as crew, and that makes it easy to fill in the blanks for the flight cle= arance. Be sure to do a print screen of the email they send back and also of= the final screen of the filing. I know of one case where they screwed up an= d accused the pilot of not filing. He had copies of the email and filing. Bi= g fine if you screw up on this bureaucratic caper. Recently, they have put o= ut the word that they will be enforcing more. If you are not sure what to put in an ICAO flight plan, call their flight se= rvice and they will help you fill it in. If you stop for fuel at Ketchikan, A= K, and then file for an airport in WA, you will not have to worry about CA c= ustoms or eAPIS. I would file IFR on this leg. Lots of beautiful scenery on t= his leg, but the airports are but much father apart. File for a higher altit= ude, like 9 or 10K.
