Again, I'm not a welding expert and I only just went to the books to look for similar setups.   I attach a photo markup of what makes more sense but the current design prevents the second gusset from being installed as the actuator arm goes over center and would interfere.  The second gusset would provide added stability and additional strength during retraction loads, which appears to be the failure mode complicated by the possible weld issue.  This is what I came up with.  Am interested in comments as I see some need to review this on my airplane.  One option would be to add the second gusset and attach a fork to the end of the actuator rod.  The fork would sit outside the existing knob and use the existing bolt structure thereby clearing the dual gussets.  Paul, Calgary, Legacy.
