I'm happy with B&C's 8 amp permanent magnet alternator
as backup in case my main alternator fails:
It's relatively cheap, light, and easily fits on the back
of my IO-550 vacuum pump mount without need for modifying the firewall. It
doesn't put out much current, but if I shut off non-essential equipment, I can
fly a long time on this, supplemented with my airplane's
battery. On an IO-550, you can get close to 10 amps from it if you run
engine RPM up to 2700 enroute to your destination. It will be less on
a Lycoming, because the alternator's RPM is less.
It will probably self-energize even without your
airplane's battery connected (such as if the main battery cable becomes
disconnected). A simple modification, described on Bob Nuckolls' web site,
shows how to be assured that it will self-energize.
