Don Barnes pointed out to me that you can just unscrew the
push rods from the rod ends….

Subject: [LML] Legacy Aileron
Rigging
I’m
doing my final aileron rigging in preparation for closing the wing stubs. I
found out (the hard way) that I need special beveled washers on the rod end
bearings to prevent binding when the stick is moved fore and aft. The manual
says to use them on both rod end bearings where they connect to idler arm. But
the outer pushrod doesn’t need them since it has no rotational movement -
they just act as spacers. It is hard enough to install these tiny washers with
the wing open. I can’t imagine trying to do it through the wheel well.
I
know I will have to remove the wing at least once or twice for sanding and
painting, which means unbolting the outer pushrod at the idler arm. I was
thinking of using a wider rod end bearing, p/n F45-19 on the outer pushrod, which
would eliminate the need for spacers. It uses a ¼” bolt so I would have
to enlarge the outboard holes in the idler arm.
How
have others dealt with this? Any thoughts on my solution?
Thanks,
Adam
