I don't have static wicks on my Legacy and have flown through tons and
tons (literally) of visible moisture without any effect on my
avionics. I once had enough static to make my hair stand on end, attracted
towards the canopy, but it had no effect on my radio or anything else, except my
hair.
When I built my panel, I was careful about single point grounds for
all my avionics, which might or might not make a difference for
static. I have almost 400 tach hours on my Legacy. My avionics
are:
Chelton
SL-30
TruTrak autopilot
TruTrak backup attitude indicator
PSE audio panel
EIS engine monitor
Garmin transponder GTX 327
Angle of Attack Pro
Bose headsets
AmeriKing altitude encoder

Subject: [LML] Legacy without Static
Wicks
G’Day All,
I am interested in hearing from anyone out there flying a
Lancair Legacy without having static wicks fitted.
I would like to hear what avionics equipment you have
installed and if it is affected at any stage.
Happy to hear from anyone for or against the idea of flying
the Legacy without static wicks.
Regards
Gary
