I fly all the time without the wicks.  I have them and they are in the plane but not installed.  The only time I've noticed p-static is in moist, cloudy areas and in rainfall.   most times it clears up quickly but a few times it does kill radios.   I have not tried those conditions with the wicks installed. G430W, SL30, XM radio and wx, avidynes, trutrak a/p.
