Bill,
All the IFR programs I've looked at are around 10k (plus or minus some)
to get my IFR ticket.
It's around 5k for insurance for my Legacy, so the 15k price tag to get
me into the air, covered by appropriate insurace.
So, even if I were to do a run of the mill CFII, the cost would be about
the same.
I will probably spend a bit more for HPAT, and gladly. I don't suppose
you have ever met Peter or spent some time with him.
I assume by your (perceived) sarcastic tone that you don't think HPAT
has anything extra to offer. I don't know if you have spent time with
them, but I have and I believe that not only do they have more to offer
than someone working at the local flying school (been there, done that),
but they are very interested in improving our safety record. You might think "well, they are just motivated by profit, trying to
exploit a market". Okay, fine, guess what, I have no problem with that.
They are filling a need and I think they are doing a great job at it,
and I also believe they have experience beyond what a normal Cessna CFII
has.
I'm looking for a mentor, not just some CFII. HPAT for me fills that
need, and I think Lancair and the insurance companies have chosen wisely
in endorsing their training. But that's just me....

Kevin,
I assume that you will be getting your instrument ticket thru HPAT as
well.
You do realize that an ordinary, run of the mill, FAA certificated
instructor will not be qualified to adequately instruct you in
instrument
flying if you plan to use that training in a Lancair. These Lancair
planes
are so different from an ordinary plane that it takes a super special
instructor to prevent your imminent death in one of them!
There is the possibility though, that you could get an ordinary, run of
the
mill, FAA certificated instructor and pay him about 3 or 4 times the
going
rate for the instruction and you would be OK.
Just my opinion on all this BS. YMMV.

My feeling is that perhaps the training requirement helps Lancair
deflect lawsuits and helps them be in a stronger position when sued. My
opinion is that the training and the inspection help create a paper
trail that helps satisfy the jurors, judges and lawyers. It can't hurt
to have it if someone brings a suit against you or your estate. Also, I see it has giving insurance companies more reason to continue to
insure us as a group. I know it is expensive, believe me, I'm coming to the end of my build
and with insurance and training I'm looking at spending $15k (I still
need to get my instrument ticket). It isn't pleasant, but Peter and his
merry band of trainers are worth every penny in my opinion. I'm glad we
have them and I don't have a problem paying for their experience and
knowledge. You can't get a better mentor. Even though we live in a far more civilized time, it is still survival
of the fittest. So, be fit, and survive, and be thankful that people
out there have made it their mission in life to help others survive.
Don't stop learning and don't become resistant for paying for the best
knowledge and training you can acquire. It's one of the ways we can
keep it around.
Just my $0.02 worth...
Kevin
