I would have placed the autopilot closer to the center of the console, near my power quadrant hand, not near the pilot's side stick.

I would have known (in advance) that the TruTrak autopilot has an internal magnetometer to provide/display magnetic heading in case the GPS signal was lost (in my glass panel), and thus could have planned to use this source instead of a Directional Gyro (DG) mounted in the panel or PAI-700 compass card on top of the visor.  This would free up some panel real estate.

PS  Of course, I have a AI, AS and ALT as my back up instruments, but a DG would not be needed.
