Jay: Here is what I was told by the builder and previous owner of my Legacy. I follow those instructions today and my level currently sits at 7 on the stick.
I believe it is important to do an oil sample at every oil change along
with the filter change to inspect the filter. The sample should be taken
after the engine oil has been warmed up. I put in 8 quarts. Then I let
it settle to the 7 quart mark after a few hours of flight. I added 1/2
quart at a time when the oil is just below 7 quart mark (cold engine,
warm it will read higher), so I never ran it above 7 1/2 quarts. I
believe the engine is certified to run at 4 quarts, but I have never run
it below 6 1/2 quarts.
Additionally, I have the breather on top of the exhaust and there is some oil that always finds the belly but that is a good reason to get under once in a while and take a look. The belly and oil have not been noticeable with drips on the floor or anything.
