I'm still not clear on why anyone would want gear extension to be automated
based on airspeed. If I have to do an engine out landing, I'll lower
the gear if
there is pavement and plenty of time. Otherwise, the belly will suffice.

But if there is an automated system for some reason, and it needs to be
defeated before landing in a soybean field, then the master switch is as
good a place to defeat it as any. You were going to turn that off anyway, right?

As for Randy's suggestion that his airplane is too slow to flare without
the engine running... well, it looks a lot faster than that!

My airplane* definitely lands fine without any power. My normal landing
is without power from the perch to touchdown. The emergency practice
landing is from anywhere within a 10:1 glide of the airport. My first thousand
landings or so were without an engine installed in the aircraft, so it feels
a bit scary for me to be near the ground and not within gliding distance of
the landing.

* Lancair 235, O-320 engine, fixed 78x64 prop. The prop doesn't add much
drag when windmilling since it is pitched for 180+ kts. Your mileage may vary.
