He said you might be interested in looking at my patent. It's a solid state compass that does not precess, has instantaneous readout on digital numerics and accurate to 2 degrees. It replaces the wet compass, DG, remote compass. It calibrates itself every second, so no drifting. Is it electrical? Do you have any details? Size, weight, function, cost, availability, etc? Any brochures or pictures? How would it replace my wet compass? If all electrical fails and the GPS system goes down, so even my handheld won't show my track, will your device bail me out? Do I need it if I'm using a Sierra Flight Systems EFIS MFD driven by an AHRS unit that provides 3d situational data as well as heading? Looking forward to more information. ----- Original Message ----- From: leighbeadle@mindspring.com To: John Barrett Sent: Wednesday, May 03, 2000 8:05 AM Subject: Re: new type compass/dg Dear John, I have the prototype unit in my Grumman Tiger. I'm interested in selling the patent. The unit weighs about 2 ounces, is electrical, ND while you wouldn't want to throw out the wet compass, a 2 hour battery can be built into this unit to negate electrical failure. I'll mail you the patent drawings of the unit. The circuit board is about the size of a credit card, and the flux gate compass is attached to the top of the gyro inside the vacuum horizon. arrangements could be made with an overhaul shop, or hire an instrument overhauler to install it into the horizons. The cost of the parts, not including the horizon itself, would be about $100. The digital display would be located on the face of the horizon just above the adjustment knob. This makes a very safe unit from the pilots standpoint because all his references are on one instrument for attitude and heading, instead of having to look back and forth from a DG to horizon. Naturally, the EFIS will do the same, but especially for homebuilts, this unit saves space and weight since every plane will already have a horizon, and the standard DG is eliminated. Also the cost would be a fraction of the EFIS and other flat display systems.
