I have only opened my header tank fuel cap a few times in 500 hours.  When
I'm planning a long flight leg of over 3 hours I like to get all the tanks
completely full and not rely on my header tank full warning lite or sight
gauge to tell me the tank is full.

I have found that by having a short view of the line from the transfer pump
I can tell if the transfer pump is feeding the header tank and allows me to
tell when the wings are empty. Also if the transfer pump is reachable you
can tell by feel if it is pumping fuel by the vibration rate - it speeds up
when the input line runs dry.
