If the push-on (blade, fast-on ?) female tab type connections are slightly loose or have any corrosion the resistance of the circuit goes up and is very inconstant and not in-line with the commanded alternator output. This can cause the regulator to loose control of the bus voltage and alternator output. When it senses over voltage it crowbar opens the field breaker. I struggled with this for several months until I solved it. Just removing the connector and pushing it back on can temporarily solve the problem for a while, even months, but it will come back at some point unless the connectors are replaced. Also, using both of the field connectors in parallel on the B&C alternator significantly improves connection reliability.
