My step is permanently wired up, but not for the same reasons given heretofore. The uplock broke with my full weight on it, and as it swung down and forward my shin received the nastiest and deepest 4" scrape, on the aft edge of the flap, that it had ever had.
I wouldn't trust the uplock unless you do something to absolutely prevent what happened to me. The war hero I was taking for a ride weighed 75 pounds more than me and had just used the step with no incident. He never knew that my shoe filled up with blood. (That would have spoiled my image.)
