Landing
with the mains extended would be a good solution IF the landing was to be on a
hard (concrete/asphalt) surface. He landed on grass. If you land on a soft
surface with the mains out, there is a good chance that the nose will dig into
the turf and flip the aircraft onto its back.

Why would it have been a bad idea to land with the
main gear out and hold the nose off for as long as possible?
